First Annual CARS Workshop at Harvard

July 2004

"This workshop was just like another Gordon Research conference." -CARS Workshop 2004 attendee

"This was a great workshop with enthusiastic instructors and thought provoking lectures." -CARS Workshop 2004 trainee

A heartfelt thanks goes to everyone for their part in the success of the first Annual CARS Workshop.

With sixteen attendees from eight different countries, we were able to provide hands-on training with the highest instructor/trainee of any workshop (13/16). The three-day workshop had seven lectures each morning given by experts from Harvard University, Harvard Medical School, Mass General Hospital, Purdue University, Olympus, Inc, High Q Laser, and Coherent. Afternoons were devoted to lab training sessions with Xie Group instructors. Each trainee began with the basic operation of solid states mode-locked lasers, confocal microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and CARS imaging on Day 1, then on to details of CARS instrumentation and obtaining a CARS image of live cells on Day 2. And on Day 3 they performed real CARS experiments, which included detection of single lipid bilayers, observation of active transport of lipid droplets, using deuterium for a CARS label, and CARS tissue imaging.
